The question I never asked at the time was this: why? Why did we do these things? Who doesn’t know that guy who wants to prove his worth by taking down three dozen XXX spice wings? But why are hot dog-, hot wing-, and chili-eating contests attended by thousands of eager fans every year? Why do men place such a premium on how much they can consume? With Thanksgiving, the most gluttonous of national holidays, approaching, I’m belatedly circling back to the query....

The World Happiness Report is a United Nations publication that attempts to gauge — you guessed it — the happiness of people, and the happiest countries, around the world. This is the tenth anniversary of the WHR and the ninth publication. To determine a country’s overall happiness level, the survey focuses on three factors: life evaluations, positive emotions, and negative emotions, and ranks countries accordingly. To determine how happy a country is, the WHR asked respondents to rank both positive and negative emotions felt over the course of a day and then calculated the “net balance” of those emotions....

Over on Slashfilm, Hoai-Tran Bui is pointing out that FAWS showrunner Malcolm Spellman teased out a big character cameo recently, and that Slashfilm has independently learned that the cameo “is not one that we’ve seen in the MCU before and not one who is primed to appear in an upcoming film. However, we have learned it is an existing Marvel Comics character who is played by a well-known performer.” In a separate interview, Spellman indicated the character in question was “grounded,” which, combined with the Slashfilm scoop, could indicate that we’re dealing with someone who doesn’t have superpowers....

The movie ends with the titular agents teaming up to beat the shit out of a semi-superpowered Brixton (Idris Elba) while Shaw’s sister Hattie (Vanessa Kirby) – who shared a romantic-ish kiss with Hobbs earlier in the movie – is able to extract Snowflake, a virus that has the ability to wipe out most of the human population, from her bloodstream....

Yep! How I Met Your Mother is getting the sequel treatment, with a follow-up for Hulu starring Hilary Duff. The heads of television viewers of a certain age may explode at the news, as Duff’s Lizzie McGuire was must-watch, Disney Channel-in-its-prime family viewing during its run, from 2001-2004, while How I Met Your Mother ruled as a zeitgeist-y, top-rated sitcom from 2005 to 2014. And, interestingly, Duff is only available because her long-running show, Younger, just ended and her intended next project, a Lizzie McGuire reboot, fell apart shortly after it began production....

On Saturday, at the Saturn Awards, Marvel boss Kevin Feige screened an alternate version of the famous Nick Fury post-credits scene. You can watch it right here. In the scene, Nick Fury complains about “assorted mutants” and “radioactive bug bites” obvious references to both Spider-Man and the X-Men. At the time, in 2008, Iron Man was distributed by Paramount Pictures, and the umbrella term of “Marvel Studios” and the idea of the Marvel Cinematic Universe was still fairly new....

Spoilers for The Mandalorian Chapter 10, “The Passenger.” If you were into those kinds Star Wars of books as a kid, and you’re maybe a little bit behind of the contemporary Star Wars cartoon, Rebels, you may have recognized a certain giant spider that attacked Mando, Baby Yoda, the Frog Lady, and her eggs in the latest episode of The Mandalorian. That giant spider was first created by legendary Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie, and the original idea was to have it on the planet Dagobah, and face-off against Luke Skywalker in The Empire Strikes Back....

No. The answer is no. Everyone hates Uncle Owen in Star Wars. Luke thinks Uncle Owen sucks and even Aunt Beru seems to think her husband sucks a little bit. But all of that is suddenly different after the conclusion of the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Thanks to this show, the most unlikable parental figure in Star Wars is suddenly the best dad in the galaxy and perhaps, the truest father of Luke Skywalker....

‘Pass the Story’ is an interactive group story-telling game in which one person starts a story and then passes a ball to the next person to continue it. It’s the perfect way to make story time a less one-sided pursuit, and help your kids flex their own storytelling skills. They may resist at first — they know that storytelling is hard — but in time it’ll be a game they beg to play....

And that’s exactly what’s going to happen. The show was just extended to an eighth season, but there’s even bigger news. Deadline reported late last week that PAW Patrol: The Movie is officially happening. Ryder, Chase, Marshall, Rubble, Skye, Rocky, Zuma, Everest and Tracker are slated to come to a theater near you in August 2021. The movie will be the first from Spin Master’s entertainment division. The toy company is producing the movie with Nickelodeon Movies....
